Today , I will , for once be a TV Critic for a day today and talk about the recently shown / now showing Channel 8 Drama Series , Kinship , ' Like Father , Like Daughter - ' bao bei fu nu ping '
Kinship 1
Analysis :
This is touted as the Mega Blockbuster Production of the Year ! A 80 Episodes Drama Serial in two parts . Already in part one alone which ran for three more Episodes than the planned 40 Episodes , it continuously received critisims and bad reviews from the majority of the audience here . And I can see why ...
First , the story kept focusing on love and romance issues - and for the majority part of it ! The triangular love story of Elvin Ng , Jessicia Liu , Carrie Yang Jia Ying and Eelyn Kok . Why ? What is so special about their love story that u have to focus on them so much , from the very first Episode the Drama unfold to it's end ?
Is their love story really THAT great until they have to give it so much attention ? Sure , the trio is played by the current most popular artistes but still this is not the way to do it .... It's in fact overdoing . By focusing so much on their love story , the story became too draggy and also it gives one the impression that the aim is to drag the story longer to last the full 80 Episodes !
Two , the storyline is too outdated , I won't say it's lousy but outdated - The idea was not fresh enough . Some parts which are meant to be funny , for example , ended up to be a butter of jokes - ( looks very lame ) and some are too far fetched ( not very realistic - too exaggerating ! )
Three , the casts are not carefully chosen -wrong choice of cast ! The roles and characters given to the cast does not fit them ! The people portraying as the bad guys for example , does not have that mean and evil look even when they are doing evil stuffs ! The roles that the whole cast portrayed does not look convincing enough ! Much improvement in their acting is needed if they are to attract people to stay for the sequel !
Personal Comments :
This is one of the worst of all the longest running Drama Serials that Mediacorp Channel 8 has produced in recent years ! Even Portrait of Home ( last year's production ) was much better than Kinship , I feel . There are still doubts and questions needed to be asked , besides the above 'problems ' that I have raised .
First , why was Carrie Yang Jia Ying chosen to act in this show as well ? I personally feel is that it is delibrately done to attract more people to watch this Series ! Don't get me wrong ! Not that I am saying that Superstars cannot be roped in to act , or that Carrie performance is no good , just that it looks quite odd to have asked her to act when Mediacorp has no lack of new faces to choose from .
Second , the first part ran for 43 Episodes , 3 more than the planned 40 Episodes ! Why ? Is it a case of overrun ? I doubt so . I feel , it is again delibrately done so as to choose a much more dramatic ending for it's first part so that people will continue to watch it's sequel ! Some cited that this is done so that the new Drama Serial can start on a fresh week , on a Monday ( which I feel is not a good enough reason ! )
If they don't improve their storyline for it's sequel and continue this same trend , I doubt people will want to stay that long to finish watching the Serial and Kinship despite it's major promotion & advertising and all , I feel will become one of the major flops of the year !
Instead of spending so much time , money & energy on promoting this Kinship Drama Serial , I suggest that they spend the same amount of money , time and effort on promoting ' Path of Gold ' instead from now onwards ! It's not too early ! If they can start showing and promoting advertisement for Kinship 2 now , which will only show in December ( on Christmas Eve ), why not promote their 25 Anniversary Drama Serial the same way or ( even in a more powerful manner ) from now ?
My Hopes & Wishes :
Hope Kinship 2 story improves & that Path of Gold won't be another Kinship which if really turn out to be , I feel , will then sadly be yet another major flop - another big disaster !
