NDP 2009 Official Theme Song : ' What Do U See ? ' Come Under Fire From Singaporeans !

14 July 2009

Singaporeans are having mixed reactions after hearing this year's Official NDP 2009 Theme Song which was released Beginning of this month - one month ahead of Singapore 44th National Day Parade . Some felt it was a really good move , after so many years of National Day Theme Song , that we finally have a local band singing for us - in our NDP Theme Song , while others feel that the Song could have been much better or that some would even go as far as to say that they prefer the past NDP Theme Song sung by Kit Chan and Stefanie Sun .

This year's NDP Theme Song is entitled ' What Do U See ? ' sung by a local band called - ' Electrico ' . And after having watched the Music Video on youtube , some Singaporeans have expressed their utter disbelief and disappointment over this year's Theme Song :

Their Reactions :

' Don't like this song , prefer the older songs . '

' Erm ...Where's the use of this song if people can't follow and sing along ? '

' But this can be our NDP Song ? You know i'm embarassed to see this song when i'm in here living in singapore now ??? Get a better tune . '

' I find this song is horrible .. It's getting more worse and worse every year ! '

' Yes ... have to agree with you . '

' it's a downer ... I still think kit chan's 'home' was wayyyyyyyy better ! I hope they would scrape this song off from this year NDP . '

' hello , wake up guys ... does this even qualified to be a national day song ??? '

' Somehow I find the Chinese Version sounds better. '

' Oh god ! This year's NDP Theme Song ! They should have more cheerful and energetic NDP Theme Song . We are already facing economic crisis and H1N1, this song really pull our hearts apart . '

' I prefer ' Will you ' and ' Reach out for the stars ' .... more energetic . '

' it's not catchy at all .... the best was still home by kit chan the the few by stephanie sun... the chorus of this is so ... low and mundane .... it wouldn't stay for long... '

' yea , i agree too. It's not really fit to be an ndp song . Doesn't even have "Singapore" in it. '

However , not all about this year's Theme Song - ' What Do U See ' by ' Electrico ' are bad though , as some Singaporeans are not as criticial about this year's NDP Theme Song as they are ( see below ) . Some felt that it is indeed a good move to finally have a band singing for our Theme Song after all these years , with some calling it as ' a fresh of breath air as compared to the recent yrs ' and ' this is the sound of this generation ... A new sound has come ... '

' this song is nice :)

' lol yes it does amazingly sound like Coldplay '/
they sound exactly like coldplay! '

' this year's theme is ' come together ' i like this song '

' eh, this song is AWESOME can... First band to play NDP song. We gotta support Singapore's band, like Electrico . '

' oh my god ! ! this is good ! this is much better than past songs . '

' Awesome song , this is the sound of this generation ... A new sound has come ... '

' this is a fresh of breath air as compared to the recent yrs '

While meanwhile , an ' Unofficial NDP 2009 Theme Song ' has instead received much more praises from fellow Singaporeans and some felt that this should have been the Theme Song for this year's NDP instead !

Entitled ' Things So Singaporean ' , this Song has since been a hit with many Singaporeans since it made it's way to the Social Sharing Site - youtube with over 7,000 over hits since , and with many Viewers sharing their views and giving it the thumbs up that it should be considered the Theme Song for this year's Official NDP Theme Song instead !

Apparently , it's more catchy & upbeat tempo as well as it's easy to remember lyrics are a hit among fellow Singaporeans , who felt the whole picture - ( with it's Music Video and the whole Song and it's Lyrics are fitting of a typical NDP Theme Song ! )

* Talking Point :

* So as a Singaporean yourself ... What's your take ? Are u pleased and satisified with the Song - ' What do U See ' as it's Official Theme Song for this year's NDP ? Or do u share the many Views above that the alternate ' Unofficial ' 2009 NDP Theme Song - ' Things So Singaporean ' should have being chosen as the Official NDP Theme Song for this year instead ? *

'Things So Singaporean' is a HORRID song. It is childish, overly simplistic, the tune goes no where, and the words while cute seemed forced. Definitely the worse song I've heard in a while. Gosh I can't imagine so many Singaporeans are so still so illiterate in this age and time. It is quite shocking! Wake up everyone, get out and see (hear) the world, school children pen better songs that this, you all need a reality check!

I din really pay much attn to this yr's song but my family has found that the songs over the past few years seriously needed improvement. They no longer touch our hearts and make us feel patriotic and it's sad...

Another thing I'm truly disappointed was the whole NDP event! I don't really watch the NDP and just this year when I decided to give it a shot, OMG!!! It was horrible! Though the 'history' note was nice but the whole theme just didn't blend!

The biggest minus point - Our govt has been trying sooo hard to build a mult-racial country here but the organiser went to pin alll his attn on the paranakans?(I've been told later that he's one, that's why) What's with this race anyway, what's the big deal? First it's the 'sayang sayang' on TV and now, on our National Day event??? Oh Please!

To Anonymous ( 2 ) :

I beg to differ . I thought this year's NDP was very interesting & entertaining indeed ! My family & I who watched the whole Event LIVE on TV ( MEDIACOP Channel 5 ) thoroughly enjoyed it very much ! I personally felt that it was a refreshing change from previous years' Parade !

This year's Parade with all the jokes put up by Mark Lee & the other male Actor really added lots of entertainment values and made history really come alive !

Also familiar & popular Channel 5 Sitcom Characters such as ' Sayang Sayang ' & ' Police & Thief ' helped add lots of fun & laughter indeed which were never seen before in previous years' Parade!

This year's Parade on the whole was indeed a real breakthrough from tradition and really an eye - opener & a refreshing change! And u really can't blame the organisers for adding the Peranakan culture / characters in cos of the Success generated from ' The Little Nyonya ' ....

I thought they should have put the characters from ' The Little Nyonya ' into the Parade instead of the characters from Sayang Sayang ' ....
